How To Use USB Flash Drive To Install MacOS On A Mac Computer With Apple T2 Security Chip

This article will tell you how to use a USB flash drive to install macOS on a Mac computer that has an Apple T2 security chip. Before starting, be sure to make a backup of your macOS and then reinstall the system, because the following method will remove all the data on your hard disk.

1. How To Check That Your Mac Computer Use Apple T2 Chip.

  1. Open the macOS Finder window, then click the Applications item on the window’s left side.
  2. Expand the Utilities folder on the right side of the Finder window.
  3. Click the System Information icon to open the System Information window.
  4. Click the Hardware —> Controller / iBridge item on the window left side.
  5. Then it will display the controller information on the window’s right side.
  6. If you can see the text Apple T2 Chip on the right side, then it means the mac computer uses the Apple T2 security chip.

2. How To Use USB Flash Drive To Install macOS On A Mac Computer With Apple T2 Security Chip.

  1. Now I will tell you how to use a USB Flash Drive disk to reinstall the macOS system on an Apple computer with the Apple T2 security chip.
  2. Connect the USB flash drive which contains the macOS startup installer to your mac computer.
  3. Press the power button to turn the mac computer on, and press the Option key at the same time.
  4. Then it will let you select the boot USB disk.
  5. Select the icon of the macOS system version you want to install and click the up arrow below the icon.
  6. Now the machine will restart.
  7. Then there will pop up a warning dialog with the warning message Security settings do not allow this Mac to use an external startup disk.
  8. This is a unique warning prompt for the Apple T2 chip. We should click the Restart button and hold down Command and R at the same time.
  9. After restart, it will show the macOS Utilities interface, click the menu item Utilities —> Startup Security Utility on the top menu bar to open the Startup Security Utility dialog.
  10. Click the button Turn On Firmware Password…, then input your administrator account and password in the popup dialog and click the OK button.
  11. Then select the No Security radio button in the Secure Boot area.
  12. And select the Allow booting from external media radio button in the External Boot area.
  13. Click the menu item Apple logo ( on the screen top left corner ) —> Restart.
  14. On the restart screen, click the system version to be installed. I select 10.15.7 here and then click the up arrow to install it.
  15. Then it will go to the macOS Utilities window.
  16. Click the Disk Utility item in the window and click the Continue button to open the Disk Utility window.
  17. Click the Show All Devices menu item from the View drop-down list in the window’s top left corner.
  18. Select the device that you want to install the macOS from the window left, and then click the Erase button on the window top right side to format the disk device.
  19. It will pop up an Erase disk device dialog window, select APFS from the Format drop-down list.
  20. If you want to install macOS 10.14 or lower version on your computer, you need to select the Mac OS Extended disk format.
  21. Click the Erase button to format the disk device.
  22. When the disk device format process complete successfully, you can close the Disk Utility window and return back to the macOS Utilities window.
  23. Then you can click the item Reinstall macOS to start installing the macOS.
